Two Processes One TLB
A fully associative TLB holds 4 entries and replaces LRU. Pages are 4 KiB. Two processes use the same virtual page numbers:
| process | VPN | PFN |
|---|---|---|
| P1 | 10 | 100 |
| P1 | 11 | 101 |
| P2 | 10 | 170 |
| P2 | 11 | 171 |
The TLB starts empty and the reference sequence is:
| step | running | VPN |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | P1 | 10 |
| 2 | P1 | 11 |
| 3 | P2 (context switch) | 10 |
| 4 | P2 | 11 |
| 5 | P1 (context switch) | 10 |
| 6 | P1 | 11 |
Compare two machines: machine F has no address space identifier and flushes the whole TLB on every context switch; machine A tags each entry with an ASID and never flushes. How many TLB misses does each take?
