Three Reads Deep
A classic Unix inode, ext2 style:
| pointer slot | count |
|---|---|
| direct | 12 |
| single indirect | 1 |
| double indirect | 1 |
Block size is 4 KB and a block pointer is 4 bytes, so an indirect block holds 1024 pointers.
The inode is already cached in memory. A process reads 4 bytes at file offset 5,000,000. How many disk block reads does the file system issue?
