The Clip That Keeps You Honest

PPO's clipped surrogate objective is LCLIP(θ)=E[min⁡(rt(θ)A^t,clip(rt(θ),1−ϵ,1+ϵ)A^t)]L^{CLIP}(\theta) = E[\min(r_t(\theta)\hat{A}t, \mathrm{clip}(r_t(\theta), 1-\epsilon, 1+\epsilon)\hat{A}t)], where rt(θ)=πθ(at∣st)/πθold(at∣st)r_t(\theta) = \pi\theta(a_t|s_t) / \pi{\theta_{old}}(a_t|s_t). What effect does the clip(...)\mathrm{clip}(...) term achieve?

A

It clips the reward signal rtr_t to [1−ϵ,1+ϵ][1-\epsilon, 1+\epsilon] before computing returns, acting as reward normalization.

B

It removes the incentive to push rt(θ)r_t(\theta) far outside [1−ϵ,1+ϵ][1-\epsilon, 1+\epsilon] when doing so would further increase the objective, discouraging destructively large policy updates while still allowing moves that decrease it.

C

It guarantees the KL divergence between πθ\pi_\theta and πθold\pi_{\theta_{old}} never exceeds ϵ\epsilon, exactly like TRPO's hard constraint.

D

It rescales the advantage estimates A^t\hat{A}_t to lie strictly within [−ϵ,ϵ][-\epsilon, \epsilon] before the policy gradient step.
