The Critic Is Half the Memory
An RLHF run on a 7B policy uses PPO with four resident models: the policy (trained), a value model of comparable size (trained), a frozen reference model, and a frozen reward model. Trained models carry mixed-precision Adam state at 16 bytes per parameter (2 bytes fp16 weights, 2 bytes fp16 gradients, 12 bytes of fp32 optimizer state); frozen models cost 2 bytes per parameter.
GRPO drops the value model and estimates the advantage baseline from the mean and standard deviation of rewards over a group of sampled outputs. What does that save?
